Sailing on the Page: the Sea Voyage as Metaphor for Memoir
Whether or not we have ever set foot on a boat, all of us have experienced the uncertainty of moving out onto choppy waters, relying on our own skills and preparedness and the grace of the world to see us through a journey into the unknown.
In this workshop, we will write while aboard the 90 year old wooden schooner, Lavengro, which means “wordsmith.” Boarding at Lake Union and heading out to Lake Washington, we will approach Seattle with a far different perspective than we get during the daily grind. We will explore seafaring literature, the maritime history of the Puget Sound and get a taste of the poetry of sea voyage through hands-on experience. We will use the sound of the wind, the smell of the water and the physicality of sailing as writing prompts.
All participants will leave with new writing that weaves the metaphors of the sea voyage into their own life experiences.
